Groundhogs Day.

July 12 2009 04

I can honestly say today was the longest day of my life… Beginning in Brisbane, Australia at 7 am on the 12th of July with just enough time to pack and say my goodbyes/thanks to Wally and Julia. Then I headed out the door to take my first of three flights, this one to Nadi, Fiji.

Landing in Fiji an hour late was quite alright with me as my layover was scheduled to be six and a half hours. During said layover I planned to leave the airport and head to the beach for a couple beers…. And trying to sneak past customs wasn’t the smartest thing I’ve ever done…

However, being confined to the airport lounge wasn’t the worse thing to ever happen to me and I took a little time to finish my book (Things Fall Apart) and have a couple of Fiji Gold’s. Time  seemed to fly by with a two hour conversation with a complete stranger from Canadian and multiple shared Fiji Gold’s. But as the clock struck midnight in Fiji I was again off on another flight, back in time…

Final Days In Oz.

July 10 2009 01

With just two days left in Oz we of course had to teach this country our finest game, Beer Pong. Just like in Korea and Hong Kong, they found te game memorizing. Maybe that is why Wally is getting so close to me…

Side Note: Nice jersey Wally… Garbage.

Album of The Week.

Maxwell Blacksummer'snight

I skipped last week’s album due to the fact that I was on a boat, but I’m back with an album that I have been waiting almost 8 years for… BLACKsummers’night is the heavily anticipated new studio album from groundbreaking modern soul artist Maxwell. BLACKsummers’night is the first full-length Maxwell release since Now, his critically-acclaimed third studio album, debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 in August 2001. This album is the sensuous opening installment of the artist’s monumental BLACKSUMMERS’NIGHT trilogy. Striving for an emotional authenticity and real world sound for the album, the entire album was recorded live in the studio with an a-list ensemble of elegantly sympathetic musicians.

Give the lead single, “Pretty Wings”, a listen to below and make sure you check out the rest of this 9-Track classic here. You won’t be disappointed.

Brüno.

bruno movie poster

Just went to see Brüno… Basically because I knew it was going the “thing” to talk about just like Borat in 2006. See it, see it once and just get it over with. Nothing to special in this on… But I just need to know how he sat down with a real terrorist and didn’t get blown up. Really, how can our government look being looking for terrorists for the past decade and Brüno finds one to interview with no problem. I don’t want to give anything else away but expect the same jaw dropping stuff you saw from Borat. Overall rating: 2.5 out of 5 with a feeling being dirty for laughing at some of these jokes…

Stories.

I wrote new post about my lunch today with a new Aussie of ours but it has since been deleted and I don’t really feel like rewriting it, so here is the long story short…

Some of my favorite moments from traveling are the conversations you have with new friends and acquaintances. Just learning how other people think and work across the world help me learn about so many aspects of life. It’s also a great reminder that there are so many different ways to look at the world and so much to see/learn about…

…There will always be a millions reasons not to travel, but if you ever have the chance don’t pass it up….

Gun Toting Boaty.

So I’ve been fielding a lot of questions about what exacting we are doing on this research project and what we’re looking for in the whales… This video from the ABC program Catalyst should give everyone a better understanding. The show took a behind the scenes look with Court and Susan during last year’s research.

However we are now back on the mainland in Brisbane and It’s great to have full functioning internet again. So the next few days will be filled with 12 hours behind a screen working away… Just after we go see Star Trek tonight.

Update: Star Trek was absolutely amazing. See this movie. Captain Kirk is out of control.

The Breach.

July 05 2009 04

One of the things I have been looking forward to all week and it finally came… A whale breaching. How amazing it was to watch this “little” breach time and time again from just feet away…

The Fourth.

July 4 2009 01

Since I can’t be in the states to celebrate with the rest of my country I have decided to share some Australian phases that I have picked up along the way…

For instance…

Flashlight = “Torch”

Teapot = “Billy”

To Be Drunk = “Full”

Pickup Truck = “Ute”

Swim Suit = “Togs”

Beer = “Piss”

Going to the restroom = “Taking a slash”

Car Tire is spelled = Tyre

The letter “H” = pronounced Heche

The letter “Z” = pronounced Zed

You call your friends “Mate” but people you don’t know your “Old Mate”

They no longer have 1 and 2 cent pieces = The coins were melted down and turned into bronze medals for the 2000 Olympics

They shorten most words = “Rego” for Car Registration, “Uni” for College, “Pokies” for Poker Machines, “Exy” for Expensive and the list goes on…

Hope the Fourth was good for everyone back home… Sure missed the BBQ and fireworks out here.
